Its never to early to get ready for spring. We are excited about the many new plants
that will be arriving in a few short months
Spring "To-Do" Checklist
Trees, Shrubs, and Evergreens
Rake up and dispose of all garden waste (dead leaves, twigs, etc.)
Fertilize plants before onset of new growth
Prune out any winter-killed or dead branches
Prune spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, lilac, viburnum)
after
blooming
Prune summer-blooming shrubs (potentilla, shrub rose, spirea)
before
growth ensues
Prune evergreens by pinching back half of emerging new growth ("candles") before it opens fully
Pruning out dead branches not only makes the plant more attractive, it also stimulates healthy new growth.
Roses
Pruning should be done each year just as the growth buds start to swell
Hybrid Tea, Floribunda, and Grandiflora Roses
: Cut back canes to within 6 inches of ground every 3 years to renew vigor. Cut out dead canes and prune weak canes to 6 inches every year
Climbing Roses
: remove oldest and weakest canes at bases while dormant, leaving a total of 5 to 8 of the newest, strongest canes; cut side branches back to 3 buds; prune one of the oldest canes back to 8 inches tall per year
Shrub Roses
: shorten healthy canes to 8 to 24 inches tall and cut out weak or damaged canes, keep only the 3 or 5 thickest and darkest green ones- these are the most vigorous ones. Make cuts with clean, sharp handheld shears, cutting at a 45 degree angle just above outward-facing buds
Prune back rose canes to a strong, outward-facing bud. Make sure cuts are made at a 45 angle facing downward. Proper pruning encourages better form and flowering.
Perennials and Ornamental Grasses
Rake up and dispose of all garden waste
Cut down all dead growth from the previous year; cut perennials down to the ground, grasses to 4-6 inches high
Divide old or overgrown plants if necessary; replant new divisions immediately
Fertilize plants before onset of new growth
Spread weed preventer in planting areas to prevent weeds
Spread fresh mulch in planting areas
Annual Beds
Fertilize plants with water-soluable fertilizer (Saunoris Bloom Booster)
Water regularly, especially hanging baskets and container gardens
Deadhead flowers as needed to encourage new blooms
Vegetable Gardens
Water regularly during hot periods
Fertilize vegetables as needed
Harvest early season vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, peas)
Clean and Disinfect Garden Tools
Clean and sharp tools are a must for good pruning.
To sterilize pruning tools, mix 1 1/2 cups of bleach and 2 gallons of water. After each cut, dip the pruner or saw into this solution before starting the next cut.
Clean and oil tools after each use to avoid spreading pests and diseases. Sharp tools cut better, and are kinder to your aching muscles!
